YOU ARE NOT ALONE: REAL LIFE STORIES
Anonymous Notes From Picky People – Still in the Closet
I have noticed one backwards advantage I have received from picking. I have received attention and felt sympathy from some people that my complexion sucks. But they didn’t know that it was much worse than just having breakouts.
I am terrified to have people discover why I have the breakouts in the first place. Once after a night of serious picking I went to work the next day and the damage could not be completely covered. A co-worker asked me, “What happened to your face?” I didn’t know what to say and mumbled something about “oh well my skin is just a mess” without any other explanation.
After that episode, I have since started thinking up excuses in case anyone ever asks me again. One comeback I thought of was to explain I some moles or warts removed, which seemed less embarrassing than admitting the real reason. I also thought of retorting back, “that’s a rather personal question.” Or something like that to shame them about asking me. So far I haven’t had the opportunity to use either of these.
