CAUSES: MORE THAN SKIN DEEP
Diet and Food Allergies
Common Belief: Chocolate does not cause breakouts.
Let me dispel this myth: All the food you eat DOES affects how your body operates. This includes your skin. Sugary snacks, desserts and sweet drinks can be the root cause of many illnesses. And sugar intake definitely directly affects your skin.
In addition, it is possible that breakouts can be connected to food allergies which often make themselves known through the skin. Foods that are commonly found to be allergic are: those with iodine such as iodized salt, shellfish, eggs and wheat germ, dairy foods (especially ice cream and cheese) chocolate, foods with sulfides like wine, and tea. Nutritional deficiencies also make their presence known through the skin.
But like everything else, diet is only part of the equation. I personally became a vegetarian in the hopes that it might affect my skin. Although elsewhere on my body, my skin looked radiantly healthy as a result after a year or so, but it did not have any noticeable effects on my face, because I still picked.
Skin Signals Secondary Symptoms
The body is a wonderful organism that has all sorts of ways of filtering, processing and flushing out the toxins we deal with on a daily basis. When the body gets overwhelmed and parts of the system have problems – they will often be reflected in the skin.
Skin Signals Secondary Symptoms – Kidneys and Adrenals
When there is a problem with the kidneys, the nearby adrenal glands can be affected. The Adrenal glands monitor the production of androgen hormones along with other important bodily functions. Androgen is one of those hormones that both boys and girls produce lots of through puberty. It stimulates sebaceous glands and the production of oil on your skin. If there is a disturbance in the kidneys or adrenals, your skin can be affected.
Skin Signals Secondary Symptoms – Liver
Your liver is the largest internal organ in the body. It filters over a liter of blood each minute and effects nearly every physiological process of the body. Liver malfunctions can also result in skin problems. Waste build-up and liver exhaustion allow free radicals to attack skin cell membranes causing sallow lifeless skin or worse, acne breakouts, eczema, psoriasis or skin rashes.
Skin Signals Secondary Symptoms – Circulation and Respiratory System
Improper oxygenation of the body due to respiratory malfunction may result in skin disease. Your circulatory system is essential for healthy skin. When there are problems with circulation, there may be skin problems. Circulation is responsible for distributing oxygen to the skin. Poor circulation means your skin literally gets starved for nutrients and it won’t heal as fast.
Skin Signals Secondary Symptoms – Digestive and Excretory System
Probably the most typical internal malfunction that can result in skin eruptions is a problem in the digestive and excretory systems. Bacteria and toxins enter the blood stream through the digestive system and when there is intestinal imbalance, they will eventually make their way to the skin. When waste materials are not properly managed so that toxins again find a way out through nature’s original intent – they find their way out through the skin.
Other Medical Causes for Breakouts
Skin picking itself can be a symptom of other disorders such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Prader-Willi (PWS).
ADD has numerous possible causes from genetic to emotional, chemical, hormonal, or nutritional allergies. In addition to nose, hair and skin picking some of the other symptoms include constant movement, disruptive behavior, poor eating habits, extreme moodiness and irritability. PWS Some of the other symptoms include extreme obesity, petite stature, weak muscles, and certain personality attributes.
When skin problems are more than skin deep it does not mean they are specifically caused by inner physical dysfunction. It can also mean inner emotional dysfunction as we will learn next.
